Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You Are Salt, Light, and Wonderfully Made
Welcome back! Can you recall where we left off last week? If not, I encourage you to revisit it before diving into today’s blog post. Last week, we explored God's intention for us as His creation. We learned that we are called to have dominion over all things and discussed the significance of knowing who God has called us to be. This foundational knowledge is key to living a thriving life. We also introduced the programming language Ruby as a metaphor for spiritual growth.
Today, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will dive deeper into scripture to gain a clearer understanding of our identity in Christ. Let’s uncover the truth about who we are, using both the GNV and NLT versions of the Bible.
You Are Salt of the Earth
In Matthew 5:13, Jesus says, "You are the salt of the earth" (NLT). The GNV translation even emphasizes, "Salt for the whole human race." Take a moment to let this sink in. Jesus didn’t say "salt of your neighborhood" or "salt of your family," but salt for the entire universe. Salt is essential for flavor—it transforms whatever it touches. Think about a soup without salt: bland, unappealing, and hard to eat. That’s how critical salt is, and this is the level of significance you carry.
You are meant to bring life, flavor, and transformation wherever you go. You are significant. You are essential. It’s time to stop underestimating yourself. Stand up and bring color, vibrancy, and spiritual flavor to every place you find yourself.
You Are the Light of the World
In Matthew 5:14, Jesus continues, "You are the light of the world." Light reveals, guides, and dispels darkness. Where there is light, darkness cannot stand. So why have you allowed fear to dim your light? Why are you hiding the brightness God has placed in you, the light meant to guide others? You are not meant to be hidden. The Bible says you should be on a lampstand for all to see, glorifying your Father in heaven.
When you refuse to shine as God’s light, people are being deprived of direction, encouragement, and the life that God intended for them to find through you. Step up today! Call your name and declare, “I am salt, and I am light! I add flavor to all things, and I shine for all to see.”
You Are a Child of God
1 John 3:1 tells us, "See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are!" (NLT). Notice this powerful truth: you are not just called a child of God; you are His child. This is your reality, not just a claim. Imagine being a child of the most loving and powerful Father—this is your truth. You carry His DNA, His mark. Apostle Paul writes, "I bear the mark of Christ; let no one trouble me." This is the authority and assurance you have as God's child.
Say your name aloud, and picture adding "God" to it as your surname—remind yourself that you belong to Him. This relationship with God is as intimate and secure as that between a loving father and his child. Live in this reality today!
You Are a Friend of God
In 2 Corinthians 5:18 and John 15:15, God calls us His friends. Friendship with God means we are no longer in a distant, master-servant relationship. Just as you would chat with a close friend, you can speak freely with God. He desires a one-on-one, personal relationship with you. Take advantage of this invitation to approach Him, share your heart, and enjoy the closeness He offers.
You Are Chosen, Royal, and Set Apart
1 Peter 2:9 declares, "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own possession." This means you have been specially chosen to proclaim His wonderful works. You are not living in darkness; you’ve been brought into His marvelous light. You are chosen, not forsaken. Say it to yourself: "I am a chosen race. I am a royal priest, a holy person. I am God's own possession, called to proclaim His greatness!"
This is who you are, and I want you to live fully in that truth. Let the world see who God has called you to be.
You Are Wonderfully Made
Psalm 139:13-14 (NLT) beautifully expresses how "You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!" Speak this over yourself: "I am wonderfully made. I am marvelous." Never doubt the care and intention God put into creating you. Your identity is handcrafted by God Himself, and it is perfect.
Conclusion: Live in Your God-Given Identity
The scriptures provide an overwhelming number of affirmations about who we are in Christ. These truths are too numerous to exhaust in one sitting, but I encourage you to continue exploring them. Dig into the Bible and discover what God says about you, directly from His Word.
By the grace of God, this blog post wraps up our exploration of who we are in Christ. Next week, we will begin examining the "what"—what it means to thrive as a child of God, particularly in the seasons of singleness. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, walk boldly in your identity as salt, light, and a child of God. You are chosen, you are loved, and you are wonderfully made.
