Thriving in Your Single Seasons: You are God's masterpiece

There is a popular saying: "When the purpose of a thing isn’t known, abuse is inevitable." I would rephrase it this way: When the value, capacity, ability, or identity of something isn’t known, it will be difficult for it to reach its full potential. It's like buying a gadget and only ever using one of its functions, unaware that it can perform many more. Because you're only familiar with that one function, you mistakenly think you’re using it to its fullest capacity.

Now imagine the creator of that gadget sees you using it in this limited way. They might feel dissatisfied or even shake their head, knowing that you are unaware of its true potential. What you thought you knew, you don’t fully understand.

Now, let’s liken this scenario to ourselves as the gadget and God as the Creator. In Genesis, the Bible tells us that we were created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). The Good News Translation says, "Now we will make human beings, and they will be like us and resemble us." Let's explore this further with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The word “us” signifies more than one person. This means that more than one being was involved in your creation—what an extraordinary collaboration! God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all came together to create you. Think about that. You are a superior creation. Throughout the story of creation, God called things into being from His divine wisdom. But when it came to humanity, He looked at Himself to make us. Do you realize the significance of this?

Unfortunately, many of the things God made us superior to are now the very things we allow ourselves to be subjected to. The creation story makes it clear that we have been given power; other translations use the word "dominion" (Genesis 1:30). Everything God created was meant to serve the needs of the last being He created—us.

To live a thriving life, we must understand this divine provision: all has been created to answer to us. Even if we struggle with feelings of inferiority, we need to remember this truth. You might think that because of the sins of our ancestors, we’ve been cut off from these provisions, as seen in the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. But that’s not the end of the story.

Now, consider Christ as the link. The message of Christ is one of redemption, restoration, and restitution. It brings us back to God’s original plan. We’ve looked at creation and seen who God called us to be from the very beginning.

Let’s now examine our identity in Christ Jesus, who is the perfect image of God. Colossians 1:15-17 and Ephesians 2:10 affirm this truth. The NLT says, "For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago." A masterpiece is the best of creation. Just as we saw in the creation story when it came to us, God didn’t just call us into being—He looked at Himself to create us.

Since God looked at Himself to create us, why would we ever look to others or things to define us? Do you truly understand what it means to be a masterpiece? So much thought, skill, and potential were invested in your creation. You are a deliberate and divine creation! Though the sins of our forefathers disrupted the plan, they didn’t cancel it. We now have Jesus, the perfect image of the sinless Father.

Call yourself by name and declare, "I am God’s masterpiece." This truth is liberating and foundational to living a thriving life. Nothing defines you except what your Maker has called you to be. If God calls you a masterpiece, no one can call you less.

As we’ve seen, understanding our identity as God’s masterpiece is key to living a thriving life. Created in the image of God and restored through Christ, we are called to embrace our divine purpose and walk confidently in the power given to us.

Take a moment today to reflect on this truth: I am not less; I am the best of God’s creation. Let this truth shape your mindset, actions, and approach to life.

Next week, as we continue this journey, we will explore more verses that reveal who we are in Christ. I encourage you to meditate on the scriptures discussed today and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you deeper into understanding your true identity.
