Thriving in your Single Seasons: Trusting in God's Timing

Last week, we reflected on the importance of being joyful, even as a single, understanding that joy comes from knowing our identity in Christ. This week, I am trusting the Holy Spirit to help us consider another important subject: time—specifically, trusting in God's timing.

Before we dive deeper, I want to ask you: What comes to mind when you think of time? How would you define it? Is it something you feel you have control over, or do you find yourself struggling to trust that time will bring what you hope for?

Genesis 8:22 and Ecclesiastes 3:1

Genesis 8:22 says, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

I want you to notice the similarities in these verses. Both talk about time with the world. As long as the world exists, everything that happens is governed by time. Just as there is a set time for planting and a time for harvest, there is a time for every aspect of life. A tree that has been planted will only germinate and bear fruit in its appointed time.

Society vs. God’s Timing

But here’s where many of us struggle: we allow the world to define our timing for us. Society sets expectations—whether it’s the age to get married, have children, or accomplish certain life goals—and when things don’t happen when we expect, we become anxious and discouraged. We start questioning ourselves, sometimes even God.

When the Supreme God, who is not even limited by time, delays something we desire, we begin to worry. We lose our joy and, instead of truly living, we begin to merely exist—constantly caught in deep thoughts, sometimes teetering on the edge of depression. Your worries about still being single or any delayed blessing are valid, especially when society expects otherwise.

But can I encourage you today? God makes all things beautiful in His own time—not society’s time.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that God chooses the time for everything that happens. It's His timing that matters. When we align our understanding with this truth, we find peace. Just like you don’t question why an apple tree doesn’t bear fruit in the same season as other fruits, but in it's time, you shouldn’t compare yourself to others. Each plant has its own timing, and so do you.

Different Plants, Different Timings: An Analogy

Have you ever wondered why we have annual plants, biennial plants, and perennial plants? They are all plants, but their growth cycles are different. Some take longer to bloom than others, but that doesn’t make one more valuable than the other. Their differences don’t diminish their worth.

Similarly, we are all unique in God’s eyes. We cannot compare our journey or the timing of our milestones with others. You are exactly where you need to be because God has chosen your timing.

Even though He is not bound by time, He works within it to make all things beautiful.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 - Beauty in His Time

The Bible promises in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” This is such a profound and comforting truth. It reminds us that when it’s our time, God will bring something so beautiful into our lives that we will stand in awe of His perfect plan. But until that time comes, we are called to trust Him.

Think about this: if you truly believe that God knows you better than anyone else and sees your entire life from beginning to end, then trusting His timing isn't just about patience—it's about trusting His wisdom. He created you. He knows exactly what you need and when you need it. Just as a farmer doesn’t harvest before the crop is ready, God doesn’t move before it’s time.

If He is delaying something in your life, it’s not because He’s forgotten you. It’s because He is preparing you. That delay could be His protection, His preparation, or even His provision. So, the waiting isn’t wasted time—it’s purposeful time.

You may be feeling pressure from family, friends, or society to move forward into the next stage of life. But remember this: God's timing is never rushed, and it is never late. And trust me, when it’s your time, it will be more beautiful than you could have ever imagined.

Personal Reflection: Learning to Trust

To bring this home, let me share a personal reflection. I, too, have struggled with trusting God's timing, particularly when it seemed like everyone around me was reaching milestones that I hadn’t. I was frustrated and it felt like God had forsaken me. God had to bring me to the understanding that my destination is different from others, hence my journey will be different. I learned that waiting is part of the process of becoming who God wants me to be. His timing has always proven better than mine. I trust in Him and I am still learning to TRUST in Him.

So as you reflect on your life, whether you are single, waiting for a new opportunity, or longing for a dream to come true, remember that God’s timing is perfect. He chooses the time for each season, and when it is your time, it will be beautiful.

Stop comparing your timeline to others, and start trusting in the God who knows you better than anyone else. Trust in His perfect timing.

A Prayer for Trusting God's Timing

Dear Lord,

Thank You for reminding me that everything happens according to Your perfect timing. I confess that I have often let society’s expectations and my own impatience rob me of joy and peace. Help me to trust You fully, knowing that You have chosen the perfect time for everything in my life.
Strengthen me to wait on You with patience and hope, knowing that You make all things beautiful in Your time. Amen.
